and hello, it's been too long!

Hello friends,

Happy Lunar new year! (It was on Jan 29 2025). Let us welcome the year of Yin Wood Snake (citation: Daria, Red Rabbit Astrology, Yin Wood Snake forecast).

How are you?

I’ve been grateful for the news of the ceasefire in Gaza, although the atrocities continue in Northern Gaza and West Bank. Learning about the LA fires have been sobering, and if you are in LA, much love and if there’s any way I can support you, please reach out!

It has been over a year since I sent my last post on this newsletter, I apologize for my unannounced absence. It has been a year of withdrawing and unlearning and undoing. My name is Kadir Buvan now (pronounced kuh-dh-ir bu-vun), it’s official!

I’ve been writing poetry and stories. I’ve been thinking about my role in the world I’m building and part of. I’ve been working with intentional communities that support artists and world-builders (shout out to Seeda School by Ayana Zaire Cotton). I’ve been rooting into my voice, which felt as though I had swallowed it whole for so much of this last year. I’ve been learning astrology and tarot. I had top surgery. And my voice has dropped, my friends tell me I have a sexy baritone voice now ;)

I am coming back to writing to you all, as a regular practice, hopefully a weekly one, while being gracious to myself and taking the breaks I’ll need to sustain any regular practice. I am coming back, not because I know what I’m saying or doing now, but as a way of practising in public (citation: Ayana Zaire Cotton) and sharing my creative and accountability practices more regularly than once in 15 months (: I have been setting up this newsletter on Ghost, and my next email will come from there.

Ghost has better privacy protection for subscribers, when you give your email to a Ghost newsletter, you are not giving your email to Ghost as a whole to market to you and email you (unlike Substack). It also allows authors to turn off audience tracking and analytics (which I will).

There is nothing you need to do to be switched over, I will take care of that! If you receive an email via Ghost and would like to unsubscribe, you can definitely do that. If you unsubscribe on Substack in the next few days, I will try to track that and honor your unsubscribe by removing your email from Ghost as well. Feel free to email me if I missed your unsubscribe (or unsubscribe from the new newsletter on Ghost).

Thank you for your patience. This year promises to be so full of change, loss, grief, revolution, and January has already proven it to be so! Through this portal may we keep reaching for our people, care, joy and love.

"To come to the edge is thus to come to the curdling middle, where wild meets wild, where we meet the universe halfway in acknowledgement of our intra-dependence and co-emergence with ‘movements’ we cannot control or assuage."

I leave you with some resources to share, or offer your care and generosity, if it’s accessible to you.

  1. LA fires: From the AntiRecidivism Coalition:
There are nearly 1,000 incarcerated firefighters currently battling the Los Angeles fires. As part of a voluntary program within CDCR, these men and women earn between $5.80 to $10.24 per day, working in 24 hour shifts. Support these unsung heroes today by donating to our “FIREFIGHTER FUND”.
  1. Donate to Sudan Solidarity Collective to support emergency response rooms in Sudan:
The Sudan Solidarity Collective formed in response to the outbreak of a brutal war in Sudan. It seeks to resource grassroots civil society formations at the frontlines of relief efforts in those parts of Sudan that have been hardest hit by militarised state violence.
  1. Support Palestinians in Gaza rebuild/relocate/receive care: https://gazafunds.com/all

Thank you and see you next week, via the new newsletter on Ghost!
