Swing toward our transgressive creative freedom

On a swing set up in a water body, we see the silhouette of a person swinging. Mountains line the water, and the sky is thick with clouds, golden in twilight hours.

On December 21st, the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere, I pulled a Tarot spread to light up the threshold we are crossing into, collectively.

The Gentle Tarot has become one of my favorite decks, made by Indigenous creator Mari in the Sky/Mariza Aparicio-Tovar. It draws from the creator's life in remote Alaska, and delves into themes of wellbeing and care for ourselves, and the planet collectively.

I chose to do a simple Past/Present/Future spread, with the question, "What is the threshold we are crossing as a collective?". With two cards in the Future position, a total of four cards in the spread, came up: Seven of Cups (past), Eight of Stones or Pentacles (present) and The Hanging Woman plus Six of Stones or Pentacles (future).

Past: Seven of Cups (or Water)

  • This card depicts a being trying to choose between different stages of transformation and alchemical processes. There is an egg, a butterfly, air, fire, mud, sticks and a seedling coming out of the seven cups and their hand is pointed stretched towards the cup in the center, which has the fire glowing in it.
  • With this seven of cups there's a sense that I get of this person being afraid to touch the fire, when the fire, representing our creativity, fervour and spirit – is an inherent part of us. The question that comes to mind is "Who are we?". It brings me to 2023, a time of feeling disconnected from my own creative power and choosing others' paths over my own connection to my spirit. It brings me to a time of feeling lost and feeling death all around us, and being trapped almost in an attraction, a fatal attraction to death itself, to feeling nihilistic. It reminds me of being so disconnected from community because we are torn apart through fractured identities.
  • From Palestine to Congo to Sudan, we grieved around the world, and we felt separated from the people around us who we couldn't see eye to eye with. At the same time, we started to realize that we have been lied to about how we are different from each other, and the need to build power and solidarity from the ground up to revolutionize.

Present: Eight of Stones (or Pentacles/Earth)

  • This card shows a craftsperson, their hand stretched out, painting, intricate details on a pot, there is a palette spread out on the side of the card.
  • Our grief and soul retrieval in the Seven of Cups led us towards mobilizing our skills and getting in touch with the roles we are called to play toward collective liberation. We have been honing our skills, marching on the streets, making the zines and writing the poetry that builds bridges across differences in communities. We learned the important role that artists, creatives, dreamers and worldbuilders play in bringing about the cultural shifts needed to sustain our movement toward collective liberation.

Future: The Hanging Woman and Six of Stones (or Pentacles/Earth)

  • The Hanging Woman shows a naked femme swinging upside down, tethered to a cable on which there are two birds that are perched. There are drawings of the moon and different faces around them. There are flowers growing from below them. Their hair is blowing in the wind and they seem to have a great time just swinging.
  • The Six of Stones shows two hands and that contain one of which contains some stones and the other hand is passing a stone onto the first hand and one of the stones appears to fall down. There's an exchange going on.
  • The Hanging Woman tells me of a future where we are going to have to be willing to surrender control and flow with the changes that are unfolding around us. It shows that our path is going to need us to take a big swing towards total creative and spiritual freedom, and the Six of Stones tells me that the place where we are going to have to reach for this is in the material realm. There is a sense of mutual aid in this card, redistribution, letting go of the control that we have on our own resources. It calls for the need to leap toward getting in right relationship with Mother Earth.
  • The Hanged One in Tarot is associated with Neptune that moves into Aries ♈ in February, along with Saturn, where the two meet up at the very first degree of the zodiac. This energetic offers us the opportunity to release individualist constructs and dissolve our attachments to rigid identities that keep us divided – so that we can embrace new worlds that are emerging. The way that we can do that is not by holding on tighter, but by knowing that we have done the work to build up our skills and then leap towards the new worlds that we are creating, together.
